Some Favorite Cultural Cuisines

By: Ayanna Walton

I asked three of my friends what cultural dishes they like to eat. Tenzin said that her favorite Tibetan cultural dishes would include Momo, Chowmein, and Shabaley. Momo is a steamed dumpling that is typically filled with meat or vegetables. Chowmein are stir-fried noodles mixed with vegetables and sometimes meat. Shabaley (also spelled sha phaley or shabhalep) is a dish of seasoned meat or vegetables wrapped in bread and fried. Danna said Ecuadorian Churrasco, Humitas (Ecuadorian), and Empanadas de queso. Ecuadorian Churrasco is a dish of grilled or fried beef and it's served with fried egg, sides like fried plantain or avocado, and hot sauce. Humitas are steamed corn cakes made with fresh corn, cheese, eggs, and they are often eaten for breakfast. Empanadas de queso are fried cheese empanadas. Destiny said Fufu, Jollof rice and puff puff. Fufu is a dish of pounded cassava and is also known as akpu in Igbo. Jollof rice is a dish of rice, tomatoes, chilies and spices all mixed in one pot. Puff puff is a popular Nigerian snack of fried dough which is similar to a doughnut and it's made with flour, yeast, sugar, and other basic ingredients. Each of these dishes represent different cultures from all over the world and it was interesting to do some research and learn about these researches.
